Red Sox agree on trade for Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez

BOSTON —

The Red Sox have agreed to a deal in principle with the San Diego Padres for slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, according to ESPN.

ESPN.com reports "The Red Sox have received permission from Major League Baseball to negotiate with Gonzalez on a new contract, the sources said, and Gonzalez's physical examination, one of the last hurdles and Gonzalez's physical examination, one of the last hurdles to the deal, could happen Saturday. The team already has flown in Gonzalez."

It is unclear who the Red Sox are giving up. The package appears to be built around minor league pitcher Casey Kelly and minor league first baseman Anthony Rizzo, according to Boston.com. Relief pitcher Daniel Bard is not believed to be part of the deal.
