Many state winners and finalists awarded this year – 20 percent – was active volunteers to meet needs in foreign countries, particularly in Africa and Latin America. Winners traveled to volunteer in orphanages, build houses and educate poor children. In their own communities, they gathered food, medical supplies, clothing, books, school supplies, glasses, teddy bears, and studs and send them abroad. And they raised funds for school tuition, assistance to refugees, drugs against AIDS, clean water projects, and other basic needs in communities desperate worldwide.
There was a lot of energy devoted to the needs of the United States as well. Many winners have been rewarded for helping Americans who are sick or disabled, helping the poor, tutoring or mentoring other young people and promoting the health and safety.
